On Writing Novels at Breakneck Speed

I've been a tad on the procrastinatory side today; I got to 10,000 words yesterday for JulNoWriMo and I've been spending my afternoon relaxing at work instead of beefing that up. I'm well ahead of the necessary wordcount of the day, but I need to stay ahead because of my crazy roadtrip of doom in two weeks (yay doom roadtrip!).
So I'm trying to force myself into the writing frame of mind after I finish watching this episode of Bones.

I'm having a much better time with this novel than the one I was trying to write last Wednesday at the beginning of the month. Saturday night I scrapped my initial idea and spent the entirety of the fourth of July catching up by writing 7000 + words over the course of the day. Then I rewarded myself with hanging out with John and Tim and watching Braveheart, which was apparently very patriotic of me. Then I took care of 3000 more in my room at my new desk chair. I really like that desk chair (/geek).

So my novel, Lost in Arkhasia; the crazy stream of words I'm trying to write over the course of the next month. As with my standard medium, it's a fantasy novel, but it's set in both 21st Century America (Nebraska, to be precise) and a fantasy realm called Arkhasia.

(That's Arkhasia).

The novel follows a half-dozen college students, six gamer nerds enjoying a fairly humdrum existence at Dawes University (a definitely fictional school somewhat influenced by my experiences at the U of Nebraska in Lincoln). The gaming group, consisting of Eric (the powergamer), Dave (the newbie), Faith (the 'mary-sue gamer'), Keith (the casual gamer with a not-so-casual belief system) and Jess (who wears elf-ears to the session), comes upon a doorway to another world during a Friday night game headed by their DM, Max. Upon going through, they discover themselves in a very real Arkhasia, with the abilities, powers and appearences of their characters. It's an exciting change from the humdrum in their lives, especially since they can move between the two worlds at their leisure. But of course, things never remain so simple, and the deeper they move into this world, the more some of the group are tempted to remain lost and away from reality, and others are realizing that the apparent paradise they've discovered is more dangerous than it looks.

With a little luck, I'll post excerpts at one point or another, and probably some character work. And more maps, if I can find the time to draw them :)

Right, done watching Bones now; time to get back to the writing. :3
